So I was looking at my domain in the Internet Archive just for the hell of it. I don't even remember creating this page (march 07, 2005):

On puns

Ok so uh, I was watching the Loveless anime. It reminded me of one of the reasons I actually like Japanese; that being the way it handles meaning in writing. I just wanted to jot these down somewhere.

(Battle scene in episode 1)

Ai: いくよ! (Rend)*! きりさけ!
Soubi: 全開防御.
Midori: いきなりよもじか??
Ai: たんじゅんスペルではだめなのか??

*I can't find this kanji :(

Oh Soubi. You and your echoing seme voice.

So, zenkaibougyo + dictionary + geekery == uh, this?

心の全開防御を全壊妨業 lolol

Oh, also! メリー苦リスマス!

I don't know much about medicine, but I found this article kind of amusing, if only because I have first-hand knowledge of what it's like to just observe for very long periods of time. You'd be surprised what you can see when you stare at an egg for thirteen hours.

On Symbolism

I believe in honoring poly boundaries, but my sympathy is mainly with Chris. Pat's emotional crisis is of his own creation. He took an arbitrary symbol—"Chris sleeps with only me"—and gave that one symbol a lot of power. He made it the solitary litmus test of whether his relationship with Chris was stable and safe. People do this because it's simpler than having to really examine themselves and their feelings. It's basically replacing sexual monogamy with some other symbol. But as long as you assign power to symbolism rather than what's real, then you're mistaking the form of love for the substance.

On Yaoi Manga, Redux (and msn!)

Here's an excellent article I found today about the state of the Yaoi phenomenon here in north america and its growing popularity and exposure to the mainstream. The article is very in-depth, and highlights essentially everything I can think of regarding the subject, in particular relating to the actual publication of yaoi books. A good informative read, especially if you're not familiar with what yaoi is.

In other, possibly related news, Loveless (mentioned in the above article no less) panders to more of my tastes than should be legally permissible.

Oh, and just as a passing thought: Anyone who's been forced to upgrade to the new Windows Live Messenger, you can find some interesting patches for this new software at http://www.mess.be. Specifically the Mess Patch, whic allows you to remove effectively all of the cluttered interface features and intrusive advertising from your client. The new interface is actually quite sexy when it's stripped of all its excess gunk (my only complaint being that the im session windows are forced to be a TAD too large for my taste now).

On skill building.

So while rummaging through my old media directories looking for a source file for the books I'm compiling (Pagemaker ♥), I found an old project from my stint in Alongquin's Multimedia Developer program.

It was something I produced in Macromedia Director. The final product was supposed to be a screensaver. I never finished the project because I dropped the whole program, but what I did accomplish was actually quite good. There was supposed to be music (FF:CC's Orgel of Water), but it looks like I was having issues with importing the music into Director when I abandoned it.

It looks like I have a copy of what I completed in .mov format, which you can take a look here. (17mb file)

I really did learn some useful skills while I was attending those classes. I've actually become quite profficient at using Fireworks, making graphics and LJ icons and whatnot (like the current one, for example). It makes me wonder what I could have learned had I stayed in the program (or what skills I may develop in the future).

Oh, also, vector graphics are wonderful things because you can tweak them endlessly, but perhaps some are better left untouched.

Tales of the Abyss gamemblog (at Roo's request)

Yeah, so I got roped into playing Tales of the Abyss yesterday. I put seven hours into it from the start, so I'm not that far in as of yet. But Roo's asked me to do a gameblog, so I guess I will? *lol*

I've never done something like this before, but given my tendancies to analise games to death I think I'll try to keep plot/story details and mechanics/development details seperate.

Porn is non-negotiable.

Oh, [info]bb_shousetsu, how I love your editors.

From the recent update in submission rules:

3d) There must be a sex scene. It must be rated R or NC17. I know there's a loophole in the rule as stated but it's legalistic as well as largely facetious. In practice I bounce all submissions that I cannot rate R-for-sexual-content in good conscience (and I'm conservative in that regard; I tend to mentally rate things higher than most).

This just made me laugh.

I can't wait till my laptop is fully up-and-running so I can actually sit down and read some of these.

The return of the video-game links

LOL

Did you know, aside from being a robust game console, the Dreamcast is also an effective beauty product? According to Lara, it is.

That is just AWESOME. XD

So, I knew they were doing some sort of re-release of the original Tomb Raider. What I was not aware of was that it is less of a re-release, and more of a rebuilding. The original Tomb Raider, reconstructed and reworked with Tomb Raider Legend graphics and GAMEPLAY MECHANICS? YES PLEASE.

Seriously, one of the things that legend needed was more combat with animals. I know for a fact that the first game has plenty. Also, zomg, St. Francis' Folly, ++? Holy crap.

And it's for PS2 as well. Super-awesome.

Keep looking at more videos... omg. Just... OMG

One more game to add to the ever-growing purchase list. Man, Chibi is going to have a hard time keeping me working on Ygg when I have all these awesome games to play. *lol*

edit: Wow, those links were totally wrong. Fixed now.

Two posts in one day? What's all this?? (On Yaoi Manga)

So I actually attended Anime North this year. I bought stuff.

Now, at conventions I'm not usually the type to get lots and lots of stuff. Usually I buy a couple manga volumes, and then allow myself one really gratuitous purchase, like the entire collection of Nausicaa reprinted, or my KH artbook (you can bet your ass I'll be buying the KH2 one, whenever it's printed). This year, however, was slightly different. I ended up buying... a LOT of books.

Here is the sum total of my anime north purchases.

Not sure if you can see it or not, but in that stack is Tokyopop's origninal enlish print run of FLCL, numerous Loveless books, two DVDs: the Read or Die OVA, and Street Fighter II: The animated movie (complete with boobage scenes. Score!), and a few books picked up from the various Yaoi sections.

That was something that really suprised me, actually. First off, the sheer number of books available, and secondly, how almost every single dealer had a (large!) "Yaoi" section. I'm very happy to see that yaoi manga is finally developing a visible audience here. Granted, most of the material was what you would consider "traditional" yaoi – which is really not my thing – but just seeing the volumes exist was nice. And under numerous publishers. A number of which look like they're publishing solely yaoi material. (There was also this new style of publishing "Digital Manga Publishing", I believe it was...)

As I said, the usual yaoi stuff is not really my thing. But I bought a couple of books that caught my eye in terms of art (basically they were "palatable" to me). We'll see how they go. I realised that I'm very picky in terms of book purchases (both manga and print), and I think I need to let go a bit. Besides, I think I'm typecasting the genre a bit too much without actually reading enough.

So we'll see how it goes. If I'm lucky I'll find some work of serious quality, and enjoy the rest along the way.

On self-analysis

Okay, so I'm playing with ljArchive's plugins right now. The three most used words in my journal? In descending order: Sefeiren, Andeburu, Shazcrap.

...

yeah.

XD

ON TO THE PERSONALITY ANALYSIS!!

Hmm. This is actually quite interesting. And suprisingly accurate.

It seems that the program displays your three highest traits on its first run. Mine being Anality, Expressive Behaviour, and Glory. *lol* Considering the content of this journal, I'm not overly suprised. Even so, the system makes a good analysis of my personality.

In graph form... )

As compared to people my age.

Out of all of the traits, Anality and Narcissim are the only two "primary processes", or instinctual behaviours (id). The rest are all "secondary processes" or cognitive processes (ego) and "emotions".

... the "glory" amuses and suprises me. I guess that's my Leo pride showing through.

I'm deathly curious to see what this application would do with my actual journal.

This thing is cool, peeps. And hey, it also backs up your journal! Bonus!

On changing operating systems.

Honestly? Space Pinball is the only feature unique to Windows that might make me hesitate over getting a Mac. If Vista doesn't have it, then they're completely fucked and I'll have nothing more to do with them. Sorry, Bill - you have my brother and my parents, but I'm blowing this popcorn stand.

I used the emotionally abusive boyfriend analogy in my original post, but in my situation I'm thinking of Windows as a stoner roommate who's reading something impenetrable like Maths With Extra Squiggles. It loses and/or destroys your stuff at random, it communicates in incomprehensible messages scattered all over your room, it completely overreacts every time it catches a cold off you, and half the time it's so stoned it'll collapse on your bed with no provocation and take half an hour to recover. And it won't even put a shirt on when your parents come to visit.

Right now, my situation is this: when you leave the room and storm in frustration down the corridor, you hear soft music from the room next door. You know that Mac's room is immaculately tidy, all his CDs are in alphabetical order, he'll leave you alone when you want to get on with your work and he'll hold a meaningful conversation when you feel like it. And - yes - he'll even answer to John Stamos.

You want to move in with Mac so much, but you're scared that he's secretly a Scientologist and when you wake up he'll have signed you up to their club and flushed all your meds. Also, someone so well-presented is probably gay. It's probably worth it, but you want to ask a few mutual friends first.
